Day 0: Central Drakensberg to Swartberg, Kzn
From Mooi River, I head towards Nottingham Road and then take the lesser traveled tracks that eventually lead into the Loteni Valley, Lower Loteni, and ultimately, the friendly town of Himeville and then to Underberg.
Underberg SuperSpar is a good spot for last-minute shopping, and the Underberg Country Club, like most rural golf clubs, is a good option for lunch.
From Underberg, it is a short scenic drive to the small farming town of Swartberg. This small village is nestled in the shadows of the Swartberg Mountain, deep in the southwest of KwaZulu-Natal.
I meet up with the rest of our team and their adventure motorcycles at Flitwick Ranch, which offers self-catering and braai facilities. Flitwick is a great choice for an overnight stay, and I would even recommend it for a short break from the city.
Day 1 Eastern Cape Highlands.
Take the gravel road from Swartberg to Matatiele. Continue to Mount Fletcher and just after the Luzi River bridge turn right onto the road leading to the Pitseng Pass. The Pitseng Pass then joins the Naude’s Nek Pass. At the top of Naude’s Nek, we stopped at Tenahead Mountain Lodge to enjoy the view before enjoying the beautiful descend into Rhodes. While we explore this beautiful part of our country there was an announcement that this area will be declared a national park.
“South African National Parks (SANParks) said in a statement work is underway to establish a high-altitude national park in the mountains of the Eastern Cape close to the Lesotho border and the spectacular Naude’s Nek pass – South Africa’s highest lying road at over 2500m.”– SANParks
